Muscle Shoals, AL—A teachers aid suffered injuries in a motor vehicle collision (MVC) involving an SUV and a tractor-trailer on U.S. Route 43. The incident occurred on Wednesday, February 3, 2010, according to information provided by TimesDaily.com.

The two-vehicle crash occurred at approximately 6:20 p.m. when a Suzuki XL7 SUV, driven by 30-year-old Kevin Black, reportedly veered into the path of a 1996 Volvo tractor-trailer, according to eyewitness statements. The tractor-trailer’s driver was identified as 54-year-old Larry Patterson Jr. The trailer was allegedly clipped when the SUV swerved into its path, subsequently causing the tractor-trailer to careen across the lanes of the highway and down a 150-foot embankment on the west side of U.S. 43. Three large steel coils, being transported in by the truck, reportedly detached from the trailer. One of the steel coils allegedly rolled approximately 200 feet from where the Volvo came to a rest. The tractor-trailer also reportedly spilled 250 gallons of diesel fuel, prompting Muscle Shoals HazMat team to be dispatched to the scene.

Black allegedly sustained non-life threatening injuries, described as a laceration to the head, in the incident. Patterson was reported uninjured in the motor vehicle accident, though he reportedly failed a field sobriety test and was arrested at the scene. Black apparently told officials that he spilled coffee and swerved into the path of the tractor-trailer upon attempting to clean it up. Accident investigations by Alabama police troopers are reported underway.
