Product liability attorney alerts- CPSC recalls defective cribs due to safety hazards.
West Palm Beach, FL (News)—The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) http://www.cpsc.gov is recalling all Generation 2 Worldwide and “ChildESIGNS” drop side cribs due to the strangulation and suffocation hazards they pose to infants and toddlers. The product recall was announced on Tuesday, February 9, 2010. The CPSC has allegedly received three reports of infants suffocating as a result of malfunctioning drop side cribs.
According to the CPSC, “The crib’s plastic hardware can break which can cause the drop side of the crib to detach from a corner of the crib. When the drop side detaches, it creates a space into which an infant or toddler can roll and become wedged or entrapped. When a child is entrapped between the drop side and the crib mattress, it creates a risk of suffocation or strangulation. In addition, the crib’s mattress support can detach from the crib frame, creating a hazardous space in which an infant or toddler could become entrapped and suffocate or strangle.”
The CPSC has received three reports of defective-crib inflicted fatalities, all affecting infants less than a year in age. Consumers have issued twenty reports of malfunctioning drop sides, resulting in injuries such as bruising from entrapment as well as a broken arm from a fall. There have also been eight reports of mattress support detachment, resulting in one report of bumps and bruises.
Generation 2 allegedly went of business in 2005, limiting information on the recalled product. It was estimated that over 500,000 drop side cribs were sold nationwide in retail stores including Buy Buy Baby, Kmart and Wal-Mart. The cribs were sold at prices ranging from $60 and $160. All model numbers are included in the product recall. Consumers have been urged to stop using the recalled drop side cribs immediately and contact the place of purchase for compensation, which allegedly may vary between a refund, store credit, or replacement crib, depending on the retailer.
