North Attleboro, MA (NewYorkInjuryNews.com) – A crowed escalator at the Emerald Square mall malfunctioned, injuring five people Saturday, February 13, 2010, according to The Sun Chronicle.
North Attleboro police and emergency medical services (EMS) arrived at the scene of the crowded mall where Disney Channel actress Selena Gomez, was performing that day. Witnesses of the accident informed police at the scene that Gomez had just appeared for her next performance on the second floor of the mall when her fans suddenly raced toward her from all directions, including mobs of fans running up the escalator.
The fans racing up the escalator to the third floor for a bird’s eye view, were suddenly alarmed when the escalator stopped moving upward and began to slide in the reverse direction. Witnesses watched in horror as an “avalanche” of people were launched backwards toward the second floor.
It was estimated that the crowds of Gomez’s fans attending the event were numbered in the thousands. Five people sustained minor injuries in the escalator malfunction. Paramedics treated two at the scene. Three people were transported via ambulance to Sturdy Memorial Medical Hospital for doctors and nurses to treat their injuries. Police continue to investigate the escalator malfunction to determine the cause.
