The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recalled raw pet food due to Salmonella contamination.
West Palm Beach, FL— Nature’s Variety Chicken Formula Raw Frozen Diet for dog and cats has been voluntarily recalled because the product may be contaminated with Salmonella. The recall was announced on Thursday, February 11, 2010 by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) http://www.fda.gov/.
Only the chicken medallion patties and chubs with the “Best If Used By” date of 11/10/10 is affected by this recall. The FDA reported that recall only involves the Nature’s Variety Chicken Formula Raw Frozen Diet sold in the following forms:
• 3 lb chicken medallions (UPC# 7 69949 60130 2) with a “Best If Used By” date of 11/10/10
• 6 lb chicken patties (UPC# 7 69949 60120 3) with a “Best If Used By” date of 11/10/10
• 2 lb chicken chubs (UPC# 7 69949 60121 0) with a “Best If Used By” date of 11/10/10
The “Best If Used By” date can be located on the back of the packaging above the safe handing instructions. The dog and cat food was sold at retail stores and through the Internet in the U.S., and at limited locations in Canada. If you have purchased this recalled product you are asked to return the unopened product to the place of purchase for a full refund or replacement. If you have opened the product, you are urged to dispose of the raw pet food in a secure trash receptacle; then bring your receipt or empty package in a sealed bag to your local retailer for a full refund or replacement.
The Salmonella contamination was found after receiving a consumer compliant, in which they followed up with testing that found the “Best If Used By” date of 11/10/10 may contain Salmonella. At this time no illnesses have been reported in connection with this product. The FDA reported, “Pets with Salmonella infections may become lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, or vomiting. Some pets may experience only a decreased appetite, fever, or abdominal pain. Infected, but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed any of the affected products and is experiencing any of these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.”
