California wrongful death attorneys alert- A wrongful death lawsuit was filed against the Coast Guard for a boat crash at the San Diego Parade of Lights.
San Diego, CA—The victims involved in the Coast Guard boat crash during the December 20, 2009 San Diego Parade of Lights have filed a wrongful death and negligence lawsuit for the death of an 8-year-old boy. The lawsuit was filed on Tuesday, February 16, 2010 in federal court in San Diego, as reported by the San Diego Tribune.
The 13 people, who consisted of three families, were aboard the 24-foot Sea Ray when they were hit by the speeding 33-foot Coast Guard vessel, which left them all injured and 8-year-old Anthony Cole DeWesse fatally injured. The boy was pronounced dead an hour after arriving at UCSD Medical Center for treatment. He reportedly died from blunt force trauma. The lawsuit contends that Coast Guard officials were aware that the boat’s crew was not adequately trained and supervised based on to prior incidents. The Coast Guard boat was reportedly not on a rescue mission at the time of the fatal crash, but was instead “just hot-dogging” in the bay that was crowded with boats and kayaks during the holiday parade. The Coast Guard vessel was estimated to be traveling at 35 to 46 mph when the collision occurred. The wrongful death lawsuit is not seeking any specified damages.
The Coast Guard, The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) http://www.ntsb.gov/ and the San Diego Harbor Police are said to be investigating the fatal incident.
