Lakeland, FL (News)—A young boy suffered critical injuries when a rearmed grenade detonated in his hand on Thursday, February 18, 2010. The horrifying incident occurred in a Lakeland, Florida residence at approximately 5:30 p.m., according to information provided by ClickOrlando.com. The Polk County home was reportedly located on Sunnydale Lane.

According to authorities from the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, a 9-year-old child who reportedly had a lighter in one hand and a grenade in the other, touched the World War II explosive device with the lighter, consequently causing it to detonate. Shrapnel allegedly shot through different rooms of the household, resulting in damage that revealed how serious the blast truly was. The child was reportedly flown to a hospital after the explosion to be treated by doctors and nurses. He was apparently listed in critical condition.

Police officials did not disclose the child’s identity. Reports state, “It was empty. It was not a live grenade, and some family member stuffed it with a detonating device at some point and time.” The grenade was allegedly used as a paperweight and was not believed to be live.
