Lake Placid, FL (News)—A tour bus occupied by senior citizens became involved in a violent rollover crash on Monday afternoon, February 22, 2010, resulting in the hospitalization of 31 people aboard. Two elderly passengers were tragically killed in the motor vehicle collision (MVC) that occurred approximately 100 miles south of Orlando, Florida, according to information provided by TheBostonChannel.com.
A Mercury Sable, driven by an unidentified 81-year-old female, collided with the tour bus on U.S. Highway 27 after she seemingly failed to yield the right of way. Authorities from the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) allegedly stated the tour bus flipped over a couple times before coming to a rest on its side. Emergency medical services (EMS) crews seemingly responded to the scene of the rollover crash to transport 31 of the 32 people who were on board the bus to area hospitals to be treated by doctors and nurses. Unfortunately, the injuries suffered by two victims’ proved fatal. Three people also suffered critical injuries in the motor vehicle accident, while the extents of the remaining reported injuries ranged from minor to serious. The driver of the Sable was reported uninjured in the wreck. Authorities did not release any of the victims’ identities.
It was reported that the senior citizens aboard the bus were participating in a cultural tour, organized by the South Florida Community College (SFCC) and Exploritas of Boston. The tour bus was reported en route to a hotel when it became involved in the fatal two-vehicle wreck. No charges have been filed in connection with the accident as of yet.
