A young pedestrian suffered fatal injuries in a Chicago traffic crash involving an 18 wheeler.
Chicago, IL—An unfortunate traffic crash involving an 18-wheerler and two pedestrians resulted in the death of a young boy and left his father critically injured on Friday, March 19, 2010. The deadly collision occurred at approximately 3:10 p.m. on Chicago’s South Side, according to information provided by WBBM 780.
Fire Media Affairs Director Larry Langford reported a southbound semi truck, driven by 67-year-old Jack Hunt, traveling on South Ashland Avenue when it struck two pedestrians as they were heading east across the roadway between West 18th and West 19th streets. The junction where the big rig hit the father and son reportedly lacks traffic signs and lights, according to fire rescue officials.
Emergency medical services (EMS) crews seemingly responded to the scene of the accident where 6-year-old Kevin Vasquez and his father, an unidentified 45-year-old man, required medical attention for the traumatic injuries they suffered. Both of the injured victims were transported to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital to be treated by doctors and nurses. However, the young boy was sadly pronounced dead at 3:38 p.m., reported the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office. His father remained in critical condition at Stroger on Friday night. Authorities have not provided any updates concerning his medical state.
Hunt was cited for striking a pedestrian in the street, though no further charges or tickets were expected to be issued against the driver of the tractor-trailer. Investigations by the police Major Accidents Investigation Unit are reportedly underway.
