Franklin, IN—The severe injuries sustained by a Kroger supermarket employee during a workplace accident on Monday, March 15, 2010 have reportedly proved fatal. Cases of bottled water allegedly toppled onto the worker, sending her into cardiac arrest last week, reports WISHTV.com.
According to Franklin Fire Department spokesperson Ryan Piercefield, a deliveryman who was in the midst of dropping off a shipment discovered an unresponsive female employee lying on the ground in the stock area at the Kroger store in Franklin and subsequently called 911. Piercefield stated that it was unknown how long the injured woman had been knocked out, as well as whether or not she had been working alone in that area of the store.
Fire rescue officials were dispatched to the scene to rush the unidentified employee, who was in cardiac arrest upon their arrival, to Johnson Memorial Hospital for treatment. However, news coverage regarding the freak accident, published on Tuesday, March 23, revealed the woman had died as a result of the incident. Officials from the Franklin Police Department and Kroger are conducting a probe into the fatal workplace accident. It was not stated whether authorities from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) would also investigate the incident.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) http://www.bls.gov, there were 5,071 fatal occupational injuries reported throughout the nation in 2008.
