The California Highway Patrol alerts California SUV accident attorneys- A Ford Expedition SUV rollover injured seven people.
Aptos, CA—A SUV rollover left seven people injured, including five children at the northbound Highway 1 on-ramp at Freedom Boulevard on Monday, March 29, 2010. The violent crash occurred around 4:30 p.m., as reported by the San Jose Mercury News.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) stated a blue Ford Expedition flipped off the Highway 1 on-ramp and rolled down a hillside, landing onto the freeway. The wreck ejected one woman from the SUV, who was then ran over by a Nissan Altima in the fast lane. The car dragged the woman, who was identified as Norma Edith Garcia, 26, of Watsonville, 75 to 100 feet before stopping. Garcia sustained “major extremity fractures” and was transported by air ambulance to Valley Medical Center for treatment.
The driver of the SUV, Pete Mendoza III, 27, of Watsonville, had reportedly been drinking but CHP officers did not believe he was impaired and didn’t arrest him for a DUI.
Five children, ages 1, 3, 5, 7 and an infant sustained undisclosed injuries in the wreck. They were rushed to Dominican Hospital by Aptos-La Selva Fire and American Medical Response for treatment. The driver of the Altima, a 40-year-old Aptos woman, was uninjured along with her passengers who were also children. The CHP says it appears she was not at fault, but she is still being interviewed by police officers.
When the CHP wraps up their investigating they could still cite Mendoza for possession of marijuana, open container, excessive speed and improperly belted passengers. Officials believe excessive speed on the on-ramp was the likely cause for the crash. The investigation is underway.
