South Hadley, MA (www.NewYorkInjuryNews.com) – Six people riding a single all-terrain vehicle (ATV) were injured when they fell off the side of a cliff in South Hadley Sunday, April 4, 2010, as reported by The Boston Channel.
Firefighters reported the ATV riders were injured when the vehicle drove over the 700-foot cliff at approximately 1:30 a.m. The passengers were thrown in different directions. It took a group of 55 rescuers several hours to find all the victims.
Officials told reporters the group was riding the ATV through a wooded area near Holyoke Range State Park, approximately one mile away from the intersection of Hadley and Prince streets.
Colin Macomber, 28, of South Hadley, and Chloe Reynolds, 27, of Northampton, were seriously injured.
Billie Lyman, 28, and Greg Wilson, 28, both of South Hadley were reported to be in fair and good conditions, respectively.
Keith Simpson, 28, and Kurt Wolfard, 29, of Brooklyn, NY, did not have available records.
Chief David Keefe, a firefighter in South Hadley’s second district, told reporters that ATV riders often travel through the hiking trails in the area or short-cut through sections that are cleared out for high-tension power lines. He further stated that the group of six was riding on a single ATV, and that he believed the vehicle may have been loaded past capacity.
Keefe further described the damage to the ATV as, “so badly mangled from the fall I’m not sure if it will ever be recovered.”
