Highland County, OH—A pilot was killed when the single-engine plane he was flying crashed on Friday, April 2, 2010. The fatal aviation accident occurred at the Highland County Airport (KHOC) in Hillsboro, Ohio, according to information provided by WLWT.com.
Although the 50-year-old man who was piloting the Cessna 172 aircraft at the time was not the owner of the plane, John Winkleman allegedly had “standing permission” to fly the plane. Robert Skoog was reported to be the airplane’s owner. According to Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP) authorities, Winkleman had been flying the plane for a lengthy amount of time prior to the crash, seeing as the aircraft’s fuel tank was almost empty when it was downed.
Reports stated that around 2 a.m., a sheriff’s officer noticed the hangar at Highland County Airport was open, prompting the deputy to report to the scene a few hours later. At 6:45 a.m., the police officer found Winkleman’s wife waiting for her husband to land the plane, though when Winkleman eventually attempted to do so, he was unsuccessful. The small airplane violently crashed into the airport’s main runway, killing Winkleman on impact.
According to president of the Highland County Airport Authority Dan Cowdrey, “He had flown at night before. So, it appears that he was coming in for a landing and we don’t know what happened.” Authorities from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are expected to look into what might have caused the deadly aviation accident.
