Minnesota personal injury attorneys alerts- Six people died in the massive Minneapolis structure fire; building may not have met fire codes.
Minneapolis, MN—Three adults and three children were tragically killed when a fire erupted in a building that housed several apartments and an Irish pub on Friday, April 2, 2010. Relatives fear the deceased victims were the bartender and his girlfriend’s family who was in town visiting, as reported by USA Today.
Minneapolis fire officials reported the blaze ignited in one of the six apartments located above McMahon’s Pub. Shortly before 6:00 a.m. firefighters were called the building located in south Minneapolis where smoke could be seen billowing from the two-story structure, causing the roof to collapse.
Six people were killed as a result of the massive fire, only identified as three adults and three children. The Hennepin County medical examiners office identified one of the deceased victims as Ann Gervais, 43, who died from smoke inhalation while on the way to the hospital for treatment. The bartender’s girlfriend stated her mother, brother and his three young children were visiting the bartender, Ryan Richner, when the blaze ignited. Richner reportedly lived in the apartment located above the bar.
Authorities reported that the residential part of the building was due for an inspection. During a March 15 fire code inspection, officials uncovered eight violations on the building’s commercial part. The violations included the pub’s fire alarm system has not been tested in over a year and there was a lack of fire extinguishers. The owners had until March 30 to come into compliance, but a follow-up was not conducted prior to the fire.
The Twin Cities chapter of the American Red Cross is aiding the eight adults and five children displaced by the fire.
