NY-based 5 Star Apparel recalls Mecca jackets for strangulation hazards
Washington, DC (www.NewYorkInjuryNews.com) – On Thursday, April 8, 2010, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, (CPSC) http://cpsc.gov, in coordination with 5 Star Apparel LLC, of New York, NY, announced a voluntary recall of Mecca children’s hooded jackets with drawstrings. The organizations advise to stop using the recalled products unless otherwise instructed.
The jackets have drawstrings through the hoods, which can pose strangulation hazards for young children. In February 1996, the CPSC issued guidelines for the production of upper garments in order to prevent children from strangling or becoming entangled. These guidelines were later incorporated into industry standards in 1997.
The Mecca children’s hooded jackets with drawstrings were manufactured in China and sold at Burlington Coat Factory, Marshalls and other retail stores across the nation from April 2008 through December 2009. The items retailed between $40 and $100. There were approximately 11,500 units in the market.
No injuries were reported.

The CPSC and 5 Star Apparel LLC recommend either removing the drawstring immediately or returning the jacket to the place of purchase for a full refund.
