News for Illinois personal injury lawyers- A child suffered fatal injuries in a Joliet, Illinois apartment fire.
Joliet, IL—An apartment blaze resulted in the death of a young boy in Joliet, Illinois Wednesday night, April 7, 2010. The deadly fire broke out and was confined to a unit located on the first floor of the apartment complex near the Des Plaines River, according to information provided by ABC Local.
Joliet Fire Department officials reported the residential blaze broke out in the master bedroom of the first-floor apartment at 315 North Buff. Firefighters responded to the scene of the blazing inferno at approximately 11:30 p.m., where a 4-year-old boy was inside the burning apartment. His wheelchair bound mother, identified as Tiana Wallace, was not in the home at the time.
Fire rescue personnel were eventually able to find the child, identified as Omariya Dishman, and subsequently transported him to Silver Cross Hospital. Unfortunately, Dishman succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the medical center. No others were injured in the apartment fire.
His mother, who was apparently in the hallway outside the apartment when the fire broke out, contended firefighters did not make an adequate attempt to save her son.
On the other hand, firefighters reportedly alleged they quickly went into the home to search for the child and did all they could to rescue him from the flames. A full investigation into what might have caused the blaze to be ignited was reportedly underway.
According to the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA), an average of 3,365 children, ages 14 and under, suffer fatal injuries in residential fires. Children under the age of five reportedly account for 40 percent of the blaze-related deaths.
