Macomb County, MI—An unfortunate collision between an all-terrain vehicle and a car left the parent’s of 8-year-old Cooper Douglas Stulz with the devastating decision to have their young child removed from life support on Wednesday, April 14, 2010. The deadly ATV-involved motor vehicle collision (MVC) occurred in Macomb Township, Michigan on Tuesday, April 13, 2010, according to information provided by the Detroit News.
Reports stated an unidentified 13-year-old male, reported to be Cooper’s neighbor, was operating a Polaris 90 four-wheeler when he attempted to cross 22 Mile with Cooper on board as well. However, the ATV never made it across the road. The four-wheeler crashed into a Ford Mustang, driven by an unidentified 17-year-old male. On impact, the ATV overturned, consequently ejecting both Cooper and the teen operating the four-wheeler. While the 13-year-old was apparently wearing a helmet when the wreck occurred, Cooper, a third grade Mohawk Elementary School student, was not.
Macomb County Sheriff’s officials and emergency medical services (EMS) personnel responded to the scene of the ATV crash where they found the two young ATV riders unconscious. The driver of the Ford Mustang involved did not suffer any injuries. The injured kids were taken to Henry Ford Hospital and subsequently transferred to Children’s Hospital, located in Detroit, Michigan. While the 13-year-old was treated for undisclosed injuries and eventually released, Cooper was not so fortunate. He suffered severe injuries, including a possible traumatic brain injury (TBI), and was removed from life support on Wednesday.
According to Cooper’s brother, 17-year-old Austin Stulz, “My mom is taking it real hard… I’m holding up for my sisters.” It was not stated whether any citations were issued with regard to the fatal ATV vs. car crash.
