Washington, DC—A deadly motor vehicle collision (MVC) involving a car and van resulted in one fatality and left six others, including four children, injured. The brutal head-on crash occurred in Southeast Washington, D.C., at approximately 7 p.m. Monday, April 19, 2010, as reported by MyFoxDC.com.
According to information provided by eyewitnesses at the scene of the fatal wreck, a van was speeding along the 3600 block of Alabama Avenue when it veered over the center median and into the path of an oncoming Toyota Camry. On impact, the van overturned several times and burst into flames. The motor vehicle accident prompted a fuel spill and knocked utility wires down as a result. It was not stated whether HazMat crews were called for assistance, though approximately 50 fire rescue workers were reportedly dispatched to the scene.
D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Department crews were dispatched to the scene of the fiery two-vehicle accident to transport those injured to area hospitals. Unfortunately, the driver of the Camry suffered severe injuries, which proved fatal at the scene. According to reports by the Washington Post, four children, whose ages ranged from two to 12, were riding in the Camry at the time of impact and suffered severe injuries as well. The children were transported to area hospitals in serious or critical condition.
Both the driver of the van and an unidentified passenger had to be extricated from the burning vehicle. The van occupants suffered undisclosed injuries, which may have included burns, and were also taken to area hospitals for treatment. One injured victim was apparently flown to an area hospital via U.S. Park Police helicopter, while ambulances were used to transport the remaining crash victims to medical centers.
It was not stated if any controlled substances might have been a factor in the fatal two-vehicle accident. Investigations are expected to continue.
