Philadelphia PA injury news: Firefighter, son charged in lethal beating

Legal news for Pennsylvania personal injury attorneys – A fireman and his son face charges in connection with a street fight in which they beat and killed a 54-year-old man.

Victim of beating pulled off life support Tuesday, father and son arrested.

Philadelphia, PA (www.NewYorkInjuryNews.com) – A Philadelphia firefighter and his 21-year-old son were arrested Monday, April 19, 2010 in connection with a fatal April 8, 2010 beating, as reported by The Philadelphia Enquirer.

Mark Wallace, died after being taken off life support Tuesday, April 20, at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. He was described as “a good man.”

On April 8, at approximately 7:30 p.m., at the intersection of Knights and Fairdale Roads, an argument ensued between Wallace and off-duty firefighter Gerard M. Shaffer. Shaffer attacked Wallace, and was then joined by his son in the assault.

Wallace was left unconscious and bleeding from the head before being taken to Aria Health – Torresdale Campus in critical condition. Five days later, Wallace was transferred to Jefferson in very critical condition.

Wallace, who would have turned 55 on April 27, will now be buried on that date.

Shaffer and his son were charged with aggravated assault and other offenses, according to police. Court records showed Shaffer Sr. posted 10 percent of his $25,000 bail on Tuesday, April 20. The son was being held on $250,000 bail.

The sister of the deceased man told reporters that she learned the two men may only be charged with manslaughter, as opposed to murder.
