Roslyn Heights, NY (www.NewYorkInjuryNews.com) – An arrest was finally made for the Monday hit-and-run that killed an 81-year-old woman, according to a report from wcbstv.com on Friday, April 23, 2010.
Authorities have charged Thomas Krauss, 26, of East Hills, with leaving the scene of an accident.
Krauss is a graduate of the State University of Buffalo. He was recently laid off from his teacher’s aide position at BOCES.
Reports state Krauss was driving his parents’ gold Jeep on Monday, when he hit the woman at Warner Avenue and Carlyle Place and then fled the scene. Police reported that he was alone in the vehicle at the time of the incident.
Krauss hit and killed Vaghar Giae. She was a retired Hebrew school teacher. Ironically, her death came on the anniversary of her own father’s death.
Nassau Police said the force of the impact from the speeding Jeep sent the elderly woman, who required the aid of a cane to get around, 75 feet down Warner Avenue. There were no skid marks at the scene.
A neighbor described this inhumane sequence of events with, “You’d stop for any animals. I’d stop for a dog or a cat, so how could you possibly hit a person and take off?”
Giae’s family brought up the question of drug or alcohol use by the driver, but because he was arrested three days later, there is no way to test.
Nassau’s Homicide Squad gave credit to the media for publicizing the crime. Detectives said a viewer tipped them off to the auto body shop where the Jeep was located.
Krauss will be arraigned Thursday, April 29, 2010.
