Eastover, SC—A military helicopter crash took the life of a South Carolina National Guard soldier on Sunday, May 2, 2010 at McEntire Joint National Guard Base in Richland County, South Carolina. A second member of the S.C. National Guard also suffered injuries in the unfortunate aviation accident but was expected to recover, according to information provided by WLTX.com.
Reports stated pilots aboard the AH-64 Apache attack helicopter had just finished a training session and were taxiing when the aircraft wreck occurred. The helicopter was reportedly parking when it flipped over for unknown reasons. There were no weapons aboard the aircraft when it rolled over.
While 46-year-old Warrant Officer Roger Carpenter of Spartanburg suffered injuries but was listed in stable condition after undergoing initial treatment, 33-year-old First Lieutenant Jonathan Shively of Jamestown was not so fortunate. Shively, a member of the S.C. National Guard for nine years, sadly succumbed to the severe injuries he sustained in the military chopper crash.
As a precautionary measure, all other AH-64s were grounded pending preliminary investigations. Investigators are working to determine whether a mechanical defect might have been a factor in the helicopter accident. A Fort Rucker, Alabama-based crew is reportedly in the midst of conducting a full probe into the fatal military helicopter wreck.
