Pittsburgh, PA– Two people are being treated at Alleghany General Hospital after their SUV plummeted six floors from a downtown Pittsburgh parking garage. Police officials reported that the accident occurred on Thursday night, May 6, 2010, as reported by ThePittsburgChannel.com.
The driver of a Jeep Cherokee apparently lost control of the SUV as it was rounding a bend inside a parking garage. The out-of-control SUV then hit a parked vehicle, and drove backward through a metal barrier. The SUV subsequently fell 60 to 70 feet, where it landed on steel poles and a Port-a-John, causing the vehicle to fold in half. Pittsburgh police Sgt. Daniel Connolly reported, “The vehicle rotated, slid down and landed to he rear first, and then on top of the four posts.”
The SUV was reportedly parked on the sixth floor of the parking garage before it plummeted onto Charlette Way.
The two victims, who have no been publicly identified, were transported to Alleghany General Hospital, where they are in stable condition.
A full investigation is underway. Police officials did state there was a handicapped placard visible inside the vehicle, which has caused investigators to consider that a health condition may have contributed to the wreck. Impairment through the use of drugs and/or alcohol will also be investigated.
