Harlem, NY—Three students were tested for an array of blood-borne diseases after a child brought several used needles to school. The student apparently discovered the syringes outside Harlem Hospital, located in proximity to Public School 197 (P.S. 197). The episode occurred on Wednesday, May 19, 2010, as reported by WABC-TV.
An unidentified 11-year-old boy reportedly found multiple needles outside a hospital clinic on 137th Street. He brought the needles to school where three students were pricked by them. It was not disclosed if foul play or other factors contributed to the incident.
The needles were believed to have been used by Harlem Hospital patients, who also apparently disposed of them.
Reports indicate all three children were tested for HIV and hepatitis, amongst other blood-borne ailments. They were also subsequently placed on medication. They are expected to undergo secondary testing in three months time.
The New York State Department of Education (NYSED) confirmed the occurrence and is expected to conduct a full investigation.
Harlem Hospital officials were notified of the incident and noted that they would probe the disturbing episode as well.
Department of Education authorities also allegedly stated P.S. 197 administrators handled the incident appropriately and according to protocol.
