Encino, TX—A bull is responsible for the death of a Border Patrol agent, who caused a crash in rural south Texas. About 11:30 p.m., on Sunday, May 23, 2010, the agent veered off Farm-to Market 755, just south of Encino, after hitting a bull, as reported by the Houston Chronicle.

Two Border Patrol agents were reportedly on patrol in their 2008 Ford Crown Victoria, when they went off the road and slammed into a mesquite tree.

The driver, Mark Van Doren, 40 of Michigan, was pronounced dead at the scene by responding emergency crews. A passenger, Adelaido Martinez, 37, sustained critical injuries and was airlifted to Christus Spohm Memorial Hospital in Corpus Christi. Martinez reportedly sustained a potential traumatic brain injury (TBI) in the wreck.

As of Monday, Martinez was still in the intensive care unit (ICU) recovering from multiple fractures and lacerations.

Neither agent was reportedly wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident. The posted speed limit on that particular road is 65 mph.

Police officials are still investigating the fatal crash. It is unknown whom the bull belonged to at this time.
