Shawnee, KS—A raging house fire claimed the life of a beloved husband and father, who responded to blaze while on duty with the Shawnee Fire Department. The six-year veteran died on Saturday, May 22, 2010 after succumbing to his injuries at an area hospital, as reported by KMBC.

Officials reported that the fire broke out, triggering an automatic alarm to go off at 8:55 p.m., at 1340 W. 75th Court. When firefighters arrived at the scene, the home was already burning uncontrollably.

Neighbors told Firefighters that they believed two people and a dog were inside. Firefighters retrieved the dog inside the home. The owners weren’t home at the time.

About 9:12 p.m. a mayday call was issued after discovering that one firefighter was missing. Several firefighters rushed into the home to find the missing firefighter. They located John Glaser, 33, in the rear of the home unresponsive. Firefighters reported that the smoke was so dense that were forced to do a “feel and go” operation while conducting the search for the firefighter.

A resident reported told KMBC that Glaser had fell. When Glaser was pulled from the burning home he was not breathing and was in cardiac arrest. He was immediately taken by ambulance to a hospital for treatment. Not long after arriving at Shawnee Mission medical Center, Glaser tragically died.

Another firefighter was also taken to the hospital for treatment. He was reportedly treated and released.

Officials are still investigating the fire and have yet to determine what sparked the massive blaze.
