Detroit, MI—The culprit who stole an elderly man’s winning casino ticket was arrested after the Wednesday, May 26, 2010 incident. The 91-year-old man attempted to chase the thief to recover his winning ticket but tragically collapsed upon doing so, according to information provided by ClickOnDetroit.com.
Frank Pierce was a member of a senior group that was transported to casinos weekly. On Wednesday, he was bussed to Greektown Casino where he won $240 within minutes of his arrival.
However, the Southgate resident was not given the chance to enjoy the luxuries of his winning ticket. According to Pierce’s friend who accompanied him at the casino, Diana Zgrzemski, “He went over to one of the ladies and said, ‘Look what I just won.’ Someone had to have heard him.”
A man then allegedly approached Pierce, seized his winning ticket, and then stormed off. Pierce ran after the crook, pointing deputies in his direction.
Unfortunately, the strenuous episode did not end for Pierce. Pierce allegedly collapsed near Monroe and Beaubien streets. Though emergency medical personnel arrived at the scene and took him to a local hospital, he eventually died.
The Wayne County Medical Examiner’s Officer deemed Pierce’s cause of death to be a heart attack. Zgrzemski noted, “This is something Frank would have done… he would have protected himself, which he did.”
Greektown Casino released a statement after the incident, stating, “Southeast Michigan residents know Greektown Casino and the Greektown entertainment district is an extraordinarily safe place and incidents such as this are extremely rare.”
Officials from the Detroit Police Department (DPD) have not released the offender’s name, as he had not yet been charged for the crime.
