West Palm Beach, FL—A Consumer Reports study recently discovered the presence of three noxious substances in certain protein drinks. The report was based on independent testing conducted by the Consumers Union, according to information provided by Discovery News.

Consumers Union made some alarming discoveries upon testing three servings’ worth of EAS Myoplex Original Dark Chocolate Shake and two types of Muscle Milk chocolate beverages. Three servings was said to be the standard quantity consumers tend to drink in one day.

Tests revealed high levels of three hazardous metallic elements, including arsenic, cadmium and lead. Also, since protein drinks are not strongly bound by federal regulations, consumers may rely on a flawed perception of the product’s actual safety.

Andrew Shao, senior vice president of scientific and regulatory affairs at the Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN), contended the protein drinks and powders are safe for human consumption, even amongst teenagers and pregnant women.

However, arsenic was placed at the top of the Agency for Toxic Substances & Disease Registry (ATSDR)’s 2007 CERCLA Priority List of Hazardous Substances. Lead won second place on the list of hazardous materials, while cadmium was ranked at number seven. There were a total of 275 substances included in that list.

Arsenic and lead, both dangerous metallic elements, can be carcinogenic and cause brain damage if consumed. Cadmium is also a metallic element and has the potential to cause considerable kidney and lung damage.

According to Pieter Cohen, “Most consumers and even many doctors don’t realize that in this country we’re left to simply trust the manufacturer to decide what level of quality and safety they’ll provide.” Cohen is the author of an article concerning contaminants in dietary supplements, which was published in the New England Journal of Medicine
