Washington D.C.—The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is warning consumers to refrain from purchasing a product called “Arrow Brand Medicated Oil & Embrocation” due it’s potentially toxic nature. The product is also labeled as “Aceite Medicinal La Flecha” (Spanish), as reported in a FDA press release on May 27, 2010.

The warning was prompted because the product is potentially toxic and contains to substances, like methyl salicylate and camphor, which are poisonous when ingested. Methyl salicylate and camphor can also be poisonous when it is applied to a large area of skin, or if it is combined with heat to increase absorption of the active ingredients.

Abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, visual changes, dizziness and mental confusion are all symptoms of methyl salicylate and camphor poisoning.

Through preliminary testing, the FDA found that the product also found a compound that appears to be diethylene glycol (DEG), which is used in antifreeze. Ingesting DEG may be toxic. The FDA stated that further testing is needed to confirm the presence of DEG.

The product was mostly sold on the Internet and specialty stores that cater to Asian and Latino communities. Retailers are being asked by the FDA to remove the product from store shelves.
