Los Angeles, CA—Brave motorists jumped into action when they saw a school bus engulfed in flames in the southbound lanes of U.S. Highway 101. The motorists kicked open doors and began pulling 23 third-graders from the burning bus at around 9 a.m., as reported by AZCentral.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that the school bus stalled on the highway and erupted in flames.
Brave motorists helped evacuate the students, who then found a hole in the freeway fence, where they escorted the students to safety. The students were taken to a nearby business where they were given food and something to drink.
Two children suffered from minor smoke inhalation, and were examined by responding paramedics. The school bus driver and the other students were not injured in the incident.
The students were from Flory Academy in Moorpark and were on a field trip to the California Science Center near downtown Los Angeles.
It took firefighters 11 minutes to extinguish the fire, which gutted the bus. Fire investigators are trying to determine what ignited the blaze.
Another school bus arrived at the scene to transport the students the rest of the way to the California Science Center.
