Salem, OR—A head-on collision along Highway 99W killed a 77-year-old man after another motorist over-corrected and veered into his path. The fatal collision occurred on Thursday, June 3, 2010, just south of Monmouth, as reported by the Statesman Journal.

The Oregon State Patrol (OSP) stated, Amanda Parsons, 19, of Missoula, Mont., was driving her 2000 Nissan Xterra northbound on Highway 99W, when her vehicle drifted onto the shoulder. In an attempt to get back into her lane, Parsons tried to veer into her lane, but over-corrected and stuck a southbound 2002 Honda Civic head-on.

The collision killed the driver of the Honda, identified as Jack Mitchell, of Newport. He was pronounced dead at the scene by responding emergency crews.

Mitchell’s passenger, Nancy Mitchell, 83, of Newport, sustained apparent serious injuries and was rushed to Good Samaritan Regional Hospital in Corvallis. She was then transferred to Legal Emanuel Medical Center in Portland where he is listed in critical condition.

Parsons and a passenger, Tyler Funk, 19, of Portland, were rushed to Salem Hospital for treatment of “minor injuries.” Both Parsons and Funk were reportedly treated and released.

The Collision Reconstruction Unit was called to the scene to investigate. The Oregon Department of Transportation, Polk County sheriff’s Office and Marion County Sheriff’s Office also responded to the scene of the fatal crash.
