Fargo, ND—Two workers were hospitalized when they plummeted 40 to 60 feet to the ground as a crane toppled over. Authorities rushed to the Monsanto facility at 304 Center Street in West Fargo on Monday morning, June 7, 2010, just after 10 a.m., as reported by WDAY.
West Fargo police reported two construction workers were working in a raised basket of a platform jack while performing work on the building, when the crane somehow tipped over, causing the workers to fall to the ground.
The workers were reportedly wearing protective harnesses, but they still suffered multiple broken bones and internal injuries in the fall. One worker sustained a broken leg and ribs, while the other suffered a broken arm. Their injuries are considered to be non-life threatening.
When rescue teams arrived at the scene, they found the workers lying underneath the platform. Luckily, the entire weight of the platform did not fall onto the injured workers.
Officials are trying to determine what caused the crane to fall over. Officials with the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) are expected to arrive at the scene to conduct a full investigation.
Fagen Inc., a Granite Falls, Minn., subcontractor employed the injured workers.
