Los Angeles, CA—A California Highway Patrol (CHP) officer is in serious condition following an accident along the 405 Freeway. Officials reported the accident occurred at 8:35 a.m., on the northbound 405 Freeway, just south of the 10 Freeway, in the Palms area, as reported by the Los Angeles Times.

Authorities reported that veteran CHP motorcycle officer, Phillip Ortiz, 52, was writing a citation for the driver of a Honda SUV, in which he stopped along the northbound lanes of the 405 Freeway. As Ortiz was issuing the citation, an Infiniti that was illegally passing on the right shoulder struck him.

CHP Sgt. Mark Garrett stated, “An Infiniti sedan was trying to pass traffic by driving on the right shoulder. The driver of the Infiniti didn’t stop when he got to the traffic stop and rammed the officer and the SUV from behind.”

Ortiz was reportedly in cardiac arrest as responding emergency medical crews loaded him into an ambulance. He was rushed to Ronald Regan UCLA Medical Center in critical condition.

The two occupants of the Honda were taken to an area hospital for treatment of minor injuries. The driver of the Infiniti was also transported to the hospital in an unknown condition.

Aerial views showed a mangled CHP motorcycle embedded with the two vehicles at the National off-ramp.

A full investigation is currently underway.
