Spartanburg, SC—An unfortunate ATV accident claimed the life of a teen and left another person injured on Sunday, June 13, 2010. The violent four-wheeler wreck occurred in Spartanburg, south of Cowpens, South Carolina, according to information provided by GoUpstate.com.
Reports indicated 16-year-old Kenneth Allen Ruble was operating a 1998 Polaris all terrain vehicle at approximately 4:30 p.m. Sadly, he lost control of the ATV while negotiating a curve on westbound Patterson Road. The four-wheeler consequently veered off the left side of the road, smashing into a tree.
Both Ruble and his unidentified 15-year-old passenger were ejected from the ATV on impact. While Ruble was reportedly wearing a helmet at the time, his passenger was not.
Emergency medical services (EMS) crews arrived at the scene to rush Ruble and his passenger to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center for treatment.
However, Ruble’s severe injuries proved fatal at the hospital shortly after. He was pronounced dead at 5:34 p.m. Ruble was a student at Broom High School.
The passenger’s condition and identity were not specified, according to South Carolina Highway Patrol (SCHP) Sgt. R.K. Hughes.
Sgt. Hughes noted that it is generally unlawful to operate ATVs on public roadways, with the exception of those used to farming means. It was unknown whether Ruble had legal authorization to ride the four-wheeler on the road at the time.
The Spartanburg County Coroner’s Office and SCHP are expected to conduct a full investigation into the fatal ATV accident.
