New York, NY—Seven people were injured when a free outdoor concert at South Street Seaport was canceled, angering thousands of fans. The New York Police Department called the scene “a riot,” complete with fistfights, thrown objects, mace and all out chaos, as reported by The Rolling Stone.
On Tuesday, June 15, 2010, Toronto MC known as Drake, Hanson and an opening act, Ninjasonik were set to take the stage to give a free concert for the fans.
The problems began at around 6:30 p.m., when fans learned that Drake would not be performing until 8 p.m. The concert fliers advertised that the free show would run from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Ninjasonik was within minutes of taking the stage when police officials decided to cancel the show. Seaport estimated 10,000 fans would attend the show, but almost double that amount showed up, which forced some people to climb on top of kiosk rooftops to watch the show.
There were reportedly fistfights among the crowd; some even threw metal chairs and flowerpots from the second floor of a restaurant, after the angry fans learned the show was canceled. Seven people were injured in the chaos, including two people who sustained head injuries.
A Seaport spokesperson stated, “By the announced showtime, bow the Seaport management and the NYPD estimated that the onsite crowd had greatly exceeded safe capacity and the show could no longer be presented in a safe atmosphere”
