Reno, NV—A truck driver was killed when the lumber truck he was driving apparently lost its breaks, flew off the end of a runaway truck ramp and slammed into a nearby home. A witness saw the truck speed down the Mount Rose Highway at about 8:15 a.m. on Friday, June 18, 2010 before it slammed into a home located near the junction with Nevada 28, as reported by Reno Gazette-Journal.

According to the Nevada Highway Patrol, a 45-foot lumber truck was driving on the highway, when he lost his breaks and sped down the runaway ramp. The truck then catapulted off the ramp without slowing down and crashed into the side of an Incline Village home. The truck then caught fire, engulfing the home in flames, leaving the two-story Woodbridge Circle house completely gutted. Four pet cats were killed in the fire.

The driver of the truck was killed in the wreck. Rescue crews worked all though the day to remove the truck’s cab from the inside the smoldering house. Officials believe the cab of the truck is holding the body of the deceased truck driver.

Gwendolynn Ewasko, 19, was inside her home when the truck came barreling through. She was able to escape without sustaining any injuries.

The Nevada Highway Patrol is withholding the identify of the truck driver until his identity is confirmed and the family has been notified.

A full investigation is currently underway into what exactly caused the truck to loose its breaks.
