Salt Lake City, UT—A boy is in critical condition after he was involved in a hit-and-run near Liberty Park. The 6-year-old was walking his bike across a crosswalk with his mother at 500 East Herbert Ave. (1040 South) when he was struck on Monday, June 21, 2010, as reported by the Desert News.
Salt Lake Police Lt. Mark Scharman stated, the boy and his mother were crossing the street in the crosswalk when a southbound vehicle hit their brakes but did not stop in time, hitting the boy.
Witnesses reported that the boy was thrown several feet in the air as the vehicle took off, fleeing the scene while traveling south on 500 East. Police are trying to find the vehicle and the driver, which is described to be either a black SUV or a truck with a shell. Other witnesses said the vehicle appeared to be speeding at the time of the accident, traveling at least 40 mph in a 30 mph zone.
Responding emergency medical services (EMS) crews rushed the injured boy by ambulance to University Hospital for treatment. He is listed in critical condition. Thankfully, CT scans showed that the boy sustained no brain damage.
Salt Lake City police are asking anyone with information about the suspect vehicle to contact dispatchers at 801-799-3000.
A full investigation is underway.
