Calaveras County, CA—A single-engine plane was involved in a deadly crash Monday morning, June 21, 2010. The pilot, who was reportedly the only person aboard the aircraft at the time, suffered fatal injuries in the aviation accident, as reported by the Sacramento Bee.

According to Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office Capt. Ed Ballard, witnesses claimed the Cessna 172 low-flying plane circled the area approximately 30 times before it went down after 9 a.m. The plane crashed in a field in close proximity to Pool Station Road.

Pool Station Road resident George Anderson allegedly dialed 911 after noticing the small aircraft circling the area for about 15 minutes. The plane then banked steeply, crashing north of California State Route 4.

Authorities found the pilot’s body upon arriving at the crash scene. The victim’s identity was withheld, possibly pending family notification.

Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) spokesperson Ian Gregor noted the pilot was the only person aboard the small plane when it went down Monday morning.

The aircraft’s tail number also indicated the plane belonged to an Oakdale resident by the name of Michael Monzingo.

An autopsy was expected to be conducted, while FAA and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) officials begin their probe into the fatal airplane wreck.
