Ford Edward, NY – Six children were killed in a brutal house fire in Fort Edward, New York, early Saturday, June 26, 2010, as reported by USA Today. Two adults were injured as well, while two other adults and one more child escaped the blaze.
Firefighters reached the home four minutes after receiving a call. The fire was so hot, the neighboring house’s siding melted away. Ford Edward Fire Department assistant chief said, “Everything was just fire…Top floor, bottom floor. I wasn’t risking any of my guys’ lives and putting them in danger to save someone who was probably already gone.”
Five children that were in upstairs bedrooms and one who occupied a downstairs bedroom died of smoke inhalation. The youngest victim recently turned one.
A five-year-old boy escaped after his father’s girlfriend pushed out a window air conditioning unit and pushed him through the opening. The boy, Noah Bosford, his father, Mark Bosford and the father’s girlfriend survived. Lewis Carl Smith Sr., father of five of the children who died, and his companion Samantha Cox, the mother of one child who died, survived. The two were injured while trying to rescue the children. Cox was reportedly in critical condition at Westchester County Medical Center.
Washington County Director of Public Safety William Cook said autopsies will be performed at Albany Medical Center. He reported that he did not know if the house had working smoke detectors and said it was too early to know the cause.
A single funeral is being scheduled for all six children.
