Seattle, WA– A Tacoma couple was killed while on their way home from a camping trip when their vehicle drifted off the road and overturned on Tuesday, June 29, 2010. The fatal accident occurred around 7 a.m., on Interstate 90 near mile post 34, as reported by KOMO.
According to police officials, the driver veered off the road and subsequently slammed into a bridge abutment on an overpass, causing the vehicle to roll. Authorities believe the driver fell asleep behind the wheel.
The driver, a 30-year-old man, and his 26-year-old wife were pronounced dead at the scene. Three other passengers, ages 4, 15 and 20, were injured in the wreck.
The 15-year-old male was transported to Harborview Medical Center for treatment of a broken leg. The other victims were treated for minor injuries. The 4-year-old’s car seat saved the young boy’s life; he was released from the hospital on Tuesday evening.
Troopers said they were all heading home from a camping trip in Eastern Washington when the accident occurred. The 15-year-old said they got an early start, leading officials to believe that driver fatigue was a factor in the fatal wreck.
Trooper Cliff Pratt said, “Driving drowsy is as bad as DUI. You’re weaving all over the place…all it takes is a second to close your eyes.”
A full investigation is currently underway.
