Hoover, AL—A deck collapse during a Fourth of July party at a Hoover apartment complex killed one person and injured six others. The fatal accident occurred at 11:30 p.m., at the Waterford Landing Apartments on Chase Lake Fairway, as reported by NBC 13 and Fox News.
A Fourth of July celebration suddenly turned tragic when the third-story wooden deck outside an apartment unit suddenly crumbled, which caused seven people to fall three stories. Thankfully, the two decks below were uninhabited at the time, because the falling debris crushed the two lower decks.
One victim, identified as 25-year-old Gerald Andrew Scribner of Hoover tragically died from his injuries while en route to UAB Hospital for treatment.
One victim was rushed to UAB Hospital in critical condition, and three others were hospitalized in serious condition. Two other victims were treated at the scene and released. Neither the nature of the injuries nor the victim’s identities were not released.
The cause of the collapse is currently being investigated. Although the apartment decks are small, officials wont say the collapse was caused by excessive weight.
Public Information officer Rusty Lowe says, “It’s very hard to speculate right now as far as the weight limit and what might have been the cause of the fall. However it is something you should be aware of when you’re on the deck of any structure, no matter how big it is.”
