Cass County, MI—Two motorcyclists suffered fatal injuries when their bikes collided with a vehicle Wednesday afternoon, July 7, 2010. The deadly motor vehicle collision (MVC) occurred at approximately 12:38 p.m. in Howard Township, Michigan, as reported by the Chicago Tribune.

According to Cass County Sheriff Joseph Underwood Jr., two motorcyclists were traveling southbound on Barron Lake Road in Howard Twp. when a northbound vehicle veered across the centerline for unknown reasons.

Upon doing so, the car slammed into both motorcycles, one of which was being operated by 68-year-old Carl William Tarrant and the other whose driver remained unidentified.

Both Tarrant and the unidentified motorcyclist succumbed to their traumatic injuries at the scene. The driver of the vehicle involved, 39-year-old Erick Jerome Curry, was rushed to an area hospital after the incident. Curry’s injuries were not specified.

While alcohol was not a suspected factor in the wreck, a full probe would be required to determine the true cause of the accident.

Statistics provided by the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) Encyclopedia, created by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), indicated there were 5,387 motorcycles involved in fatal crashes in 2008. Of that total, 5,290 motorcyclist causalities were reported.
