Fremont, OH —A roof collapse at a Fremont factory killed a B&W Welding worker and injured three others on Wednesday, July 7, 2010. The roof collapse took place at 1:30 p.m., at The Fremont Company factory located just 5 blocks from downtown Fremont, as reported by WTOL.
Fremont Police Chief Timothy Wiersma stated a group of welders were working on some columns inside the factory when the roof suddenly collapsed, killing 35-year-old Nate Kern of Gibsonburg. Kern was killed when the roof partially collapsed, dropping an 8-inch slab of concrete on top of him, crushing him to death.
Another B&W worker, Todd Michael, 43, was reportedly trapped in the rubble for hours before being rescued. He was rushed by responding emergency crews to Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center for treatment. As of Thursday morning, his condition was upgraded from critical to serious condition. A third worker was also hospitalized with unknown injuries. In addition, a Fremont Company employee was transported to hospital, treated and released.
One firefighter was treated for heat exhaustion as the temperature reached the mid-90’s that day.
Police officials are investigating the cause of the roof collapse.
Rescue and emergency teams from all over northern Ohio responded to the emergency call.
