Pet Treat Recall: Salmonella threat prompts recall of doggie treats

Amarillo, TX—A Salmonella contamination threat has prompted Merrick Pet Care, Inc. to recall 86 cases of 10 oz “Beef Filet Squares for Dogs” pet treats. The recall involves ITEM #60016 LOT #10084TL7 with a BEST BY date of March 24, 2012, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The FDA warned, “Salmonella can affect animals and there is risk to humans from handling contaminated pet products. People handling the treats can become infected with Salmonella, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the chews or any surfaces exposed to these products. Consumers should dispose of these products in a safe manner by securing them in a covered trash receptacle.”

Salmonella poisonings have the following symptoms among humans:

nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. In rare cases, arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms can arise. Symptoms of Salmonella infections among pets include: tiredness, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting, but some pets may only have decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain.

The recalled pet treats were shipped to distributors across the nation. Those who have received the shipments of the recalled pet treats have been notified.

The treats were sold in 10oz plastic bags with “Lot # 10084TL7 Best By Mar 24, 2012” on the top of the bag and on a sticker placed on the bottom.

Anyone who have bought the recalled 10 ounce packages of “Beef Filet Squares for Dogs” are urged to return the unused portion to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact the company at 1-800-664-7387 M-F 8:00 – 5:00 CDT.
