San Francisco, CA—Five people, including two motorists, a passenger and two pedestrians, suffered injuries after a red-light running cab driver caused a chain-reaction wreck. The violent pedestrian-involved motor vehicle collision (MVC) occurred in downtown San Francisco, California at approximately 2:13 p.m. Monday, April 19, 2010. Reports also stated the initial point of impact, where the taxi slammed into a PT Cruiser, was located about a block away from the point at which two pedestrians were struck. While five injured victims consequently required medical attention after the Bay Area traffic crash occurred, none of their injuries were deemed to be life threatening, according to information provided by the San Francisco Chronicle.
Officer Samson Chan of the San Francisco Police Department (SFPD) allegedly received witness reports at the scene, in which bystanders contended a southbound Arrow Cab was traveling on Powell Street, approaching the intersection of Powell and Pine streets, when the taxi driver apparently failed to stop at a red traffic light. Upon doing so, the cab smashed into a cream-colored PT Cruiser. While the cab reportedly came to a rest after the vehicle became lodged between a fire hydrant and an apartment complex at Powell and Bush streets, the PT Cruiser careened out-of-control, striking two pedestrians as a result. The two injured pedestrians were reportedly walking on the west sidewalk of Powell Street, located between Pine and Bush streets.
Emergency medical services (EMS) crews responded to the scene of the chain-reaction collision to transport those injured in the accident to area hospitals for treatment. While authorities have not released the identities of any of the individuals involved in the wreck, the injured reportedly included the two pedestrians, two drivers and a passenger who was riding in the PT cruiser at the time. San Francisco Municipal Railway (SF Muni) cable cars were reportedly blocked on the Powell Street line for more than two hours while preliminary accident investigations and clean up procedures were conducted. Officials are expected to conduct a full probe into the injurious pedestrian-involved motor vehicle accident, while charges against the Arrow Cab driver are pending the outcome of toxicology tests.
