Barre, VT – Two teenagers admitted to setting fire to the Key Bank building in downtown Barre on Memorial Day, according to the police chief of Barre. WPTZ reported the teens confessed on Wednesday, July 14, 2010.
Chief Tim Bombardier announced during a news conference Wednesday that the teens had been detained in Essex, New York, for unrelated charges and would be extradited back to Barre to face criminal charges.
The details the teens gave in their confession were “something that only the person or persons responsible for the fire would know,” according to Bombardier.
The building burst into flames as crowds lined the streets for a Memorial Day celebration. The fire destroyed the top floors of the old building. The owner, Mayor Thom Lauzon, reported damages exceeding $1 million.
Police reported the teenagers were the only two responsible for the fire. Bombardier would not say whether he believed the two were linked to other crimes in the city, but confirmed that the teens fled to New York after learning police were investigating them.
Bombardier reported that he hoped the arrest would end resident fears that arsonists were on the loose.
He said, “I think people need to know as soon as we can that there’s been some closure to the case, I think it puts people’s fears to rest.”
