Long Island, NY – Three camp counselors on their way to work were killed in a car wreck early Thursday, July 15, 2010, according to New York Daily News. Two others involved in the accident were seriously hurt.
At approximately 8:45 a.m., five people in a 2010 Honda Civic were traveling south on Meadowbrook Parkway when the driver, 20-year-old Jaime Malone, lost control.
The car veered off the road and slammed into a tree. The driver’s brother, 22-year-old Michael Mulhall, and passengers Jaime Malone and Paige Malone, 22 and 19, respectively, were killed.
The driver and another rear-seat passenger, Kelly Murphy, 20, survived.
Police ruled out the possibility of alcohol playing a part in the crash.
All five crash victims lived in Floral Park, Long Island, and were on their way to Camp Anchor, a Lido Beach camp for the disabled. Camp Anchor is an acronym for Answering the Needs of Citizens with Handicaps through Organized Recreation.
The camp is run by the town of Hempstead. Town Supervisor Kate Murray released a statement that said, “We are all devastated by this tragedy. The heart and soul of the camp are the young men and women who work directly with our campers.”
Grief counselors were brought into the camp to help campers and fellow counselors.
The victims had been employees of the camp for several summers.
