Miami, FL—At least 40 people were injured, 16 of whom required hospital care, after two downtown Miami Metromover cars collided during rush hour Tuesday afternoon, July 20, 2010. The accident occurred around 5:40 p.m. at the 1200 Southwest 1st Avenue Metromover station, otherwise known as the Brickell stop, according to information provided by NBC Miami.
Reports indicated a Metromover car was stopped at the Brickell station when another car inexplicably slammed into the back of it, forcing some riders to the floor. The frightening commuter train collision occurred around 5:40 p.m. and had some passengers skeptical about the safety of the Metromover system.
“It’s not safe… This should have never happened,” said passenger Jessica Cuevas who had to wear a sling over her left arm after tumbling into a door as a result of the collision. Cuevas allegedly maintained that she would not be using the Metromover transit system anymore.
Cuevas’ friend Escandra Amador was riding the Metromover at the time of the accident and was apparently sent soaring to the other end of the car on impact. “It just crashed and then I saw people screaming on the floor,” Amador said.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue personnel seemingly evaluated about 40 people at the scene, sending 16 injured Metromover riders to area hospitals to be treated for non life-threatening injuries.
Reports said there are no seatbelts aboard the Metromover cars. It was also noted that the railway cars lack human drivers, as they function through the use of an automated system.
Investigators are now in the process of determining what might have caused the Miami Metromover accident to occur in the first place. The system was shut down after the crash. It was not clear when the Metromover system would resume service.
