Chicago, IL—A violent collision involving a Toyota Corolla, Ford Crown Victoria taxicab and 7-Eleven store left seven people, including several pedestrians, injured Tuesday, June 20, 2010. The accident occurred after one driver ran a red light at an intersection in the Chicago Loop, according to information provided by the Chicago Sun-Times.
Reports indicated a Flash Cab-owned taxi was traveling westbound on Adams Street, while a Toyota Corolla was headed southbound on Wabash Avenue. As the Corolla approached the intersection of Wabash and Adams, the unidentified driver drove through a red traffic light and into the path of the Crown Victoria cab.
Unable to swerve away from the red light runner, the cab consequently slammed into the driver’s side of the Corolla, sending it careening over a curb and through a newsstand outside a 7-Eleven store at 33 E. Adams Street.
The impact also forced the taxicab over a curb and through the front entrance of the 7-Eleven store. While the cab took down a coffee maker inside the store, no customers suffered injuries.
“The miraculous part is that the cab didn’t run into anyone in the store,” Fire Media Affairs Director Larry Langford said. The accident, which occurred around 10:35 p.m., left seven people injured. However, only four people required hospital care after the crash.
The driver of the Corolla was taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital, while the driver of the taxi was hospitalized at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Both drivers were apparently listed in serious condition after the wreck. Two passengers from the vehicles involved were also rushed to Stroger. They were listed in fair condition.
While some reports seem to indicate only four victims were hospitalized, Central District police Sgt. Craig Roberts alleged two others were taken to Stroger for treatment of their non life-threatening injuries. One person was a pedestrian who was struck by crash debris. The other was reported to be a passenger in the Corolla.
Additionally, a representative for Chicago’s Department of Buildings responded to the scene. Upon inspecting the damaged 7-Eleven store, the rep. found that the building remained structurally sound.
Investigators did not believe alcohol played a role in the motor vehicle collision (MVC). Nonetheless, the Corolla driver was ticketed for his lack of insurance and failure to stop at a red traffic signal.
