Madison, WI—State troopers believe a driver who made an illegal U-turn on Interstate 90/39 caused a collision, which injured seven people on Sunday, July 18, 2010. The driver who made the illegal turn fled the scene following the accident, reports the GazetteXtra.com.
According to the Washington State Patrol, a 1998 Dodge van was traveling northbound on I-90/39 between Edgerton and Stoughton, at around 1:45 p.m., when a Jeep hit the van as it was making a illegal U-turn. The van then veered off the right side of the road, where it clipped the 157 mile-marker post and traveled another 200 feet before crashing into a fence and coming to a stop in a swampy area.
The collision injured the driver of the van, Ali-Moron Khayriyyah, 70, of Lansing, Ill., and six children who were also riding in the van. The identities of the children are being withheld, but officials said they were from Oak Park and Lynwood, Ill. and their ages are 4,9,11,12,13, and 14.
The police report stated that the driver of the Jeep “briefly stopped and fled the scene.”
Ambulances from Janesville, Edgerton, Stoughton and possibly other departments responded to the scene to transport those who were injured. The victims were transported to hospitals in Stoughton, Edgerton and Madison for treatment of their undisclosed injured.
A full investigation is underway and officials are looking for the driver of the Jeep.
