Topeka, KS—A multiple-vehicle crash along Interstate 70 injured at least three people, when four cars and a semi-truck collided. The injurious traffic accident occurred Monday morning, July 19, 2010 around 10 a.m., at milepost 188, near the Topeka service area on the Kansas Turnpike, reports the Lawrence Journal-World.
According to the Kansas Turnpike Authorities report to the LJWorld, this is how the accident took place:
• Juan Cardenas, 37, of Kansas City, Kan., parked his 2001 Pontiac sedan on the side of the road while replacing his flat tire.
• Alejandro Casas, 30, of Lenexa, parked his Ford F-150 along the side of the road, behind the Pontiac, to help Cardenas change the flat tire.
• A Chevrolet pickup truck driven by Michelle Jones, 38, of Gardner, was headed west when she fell asleep and hit the rear of Casas’ truck, which then hit the Pontiac sedan parked in front of it.
• The impact then pushed the Pontiac into traffic, where it was struck by a 2006 Buick Claire, driven by Luyckx, 76, of Ridgway, Colo. The Pontiac was then hit again by a semi-truck, which was driven by 37-year-old Jason Crow, of Liberty, Mo.
Responding emergency crews rushed Jones, Casas and Cardenas to nearby hospitals for treatment of their injuries they sustained in the crash. One victim had to be transported with the help of a helicopter ambulance. Officials reported that Luyckx was “possibly injured,” and was taken to a hospital for a medical evaluation.
A full investigation into the wreck is underway.
