Hornellsville, NY – Nine Steuben County teens were injured in a one-car accident during the early morning hours of Wednesday, June 30, 2010, as reported by The Democrat and Chronicle.
According to police reports, a five-seat sedan was transporting nine teens from an underage drinking party in Howard, Steuben County when the crash occurred. At approximately 5 a.m., the car was speeding west on County Road 109 when the driver lost control on a sharp curve and drove into a ditch.
Steuben County police stated the car continued another 135 feet after hitting the ditch, struck a concrete culvert, went airborne for 25 feet, overturned and landed on its side in a driveway about a quarter-mile east of Lain Road.
Sheriff Joel Ordway said the crash happened only two miles away from the party. He did not state who was driving the vehicle, but confirmed that alcohol was a factor in the accident.
Six of the nine teens suffered serious injuries, one of which was a life-threatening head injury.
Police reported four teens were transported to Strong Memorial Hospital, three of whom were taken via Mercy Flight. Another two teens were transported to Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, Pennsylvania. The remaining three teens were taken to St. James Mercy Hospital in Hornell.
Ordway reported the vehicle was traveling between 71 and 78 mph at the time of the crash. The speed limit was 55, but the suggested speed for the downhill curve where the crash began is about 40 mph.
County Road 109 was closed for several hours Wednesday morning after the crash.
